Introduction

ICU-30201 is a miniature, ultra-low-power, ultra-long-range ultrasonic time-of-flight transceiver. The device is based on TDK's patented MEMS technology and uses a system-in-package design that integrates a nominal 53kHz piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducer with a second-generation ultra-low-power system-on-chip in a compact, reflow-solderable package. The SoC is designed to achieve overall low system power consumption and ease of use with an external host processor. Low power consumption is achieved through custom digital circuitry that processes and buffers raw sensor readings, allowing the integrated microcontroller to remain in a low-power idle state until needed. For ease of use, the microcontroller can process raw sensor readings into high-level signals — such as distance to nearby targets or presence detection events — that the host processor can read directly. The SoC communicates with the host processor via an SPI interface at up to 13MHz, supporting 1.8V or 3.3V I/O voltage. The compact, slim package with a bottom-port opening configuration facilitates easy integration. Complementing TDK's other ultrasonic time-of-flight sensor products, the ICU-30201 provides accurate ranging to targets at distances up to 9 meters. Based on ultrasonic pulse-echo measurement, the sensor operates under any lighting condition including full sunlight, and delivers millimeter-accurate ranging independent of target color and optical transparency. The sensor's field of view is customizable and supports simultaneous ranging of multiple objects within the field of view. A variety of available algorithms can further process echo information to suit a wide range of application scenarios.
