You think our world-famous 32 LEDs-per-meter digital LED strip is already the best, but we're here to prove you wrong! Want more LEDs? We've done it (1.875x more, actually, though that's within the margin of error). Want a narrower strip? Now only 12.5mm wide, or 10mm if removed from its casing. Want a less conspicuous strip color? This strip features a white flexible PCB that's far less noticeable against white walls. This is a white flexible PCB version that is otherwise identical to the black 60 LEDs-per-meter strip, differing only in the color mask of the flexible strip. All your dreams have come true — with a few caveats.
First, higher density means higher power consumption over a given length — up to 18W per meter (approximately 3.5A @ 5V), compared to the previous maximum of 9.6W (approximately 2A @ 5V). The maximum rating assumes all LEDs are lit at full white; typical current draw for color designs is usually 1/3 to 1/2 of the maximum. A quality power supply, such as our 5V 10A supply, is essential!
Second, to achieve high density, the controller IC is integrated inside each LED — which is cool, but it also means the chip uses only one input pin and one output pin. The protocol used is extremely timing-sensitive and can only be driven by microcontrollers capable of highly repeatable 100ns timing accuracy. We have sample code for Arduino Uno/Mega running at 8MHz and 16MHz; with some effort it can also work on Raspberry Pi or BeagleBone Black, but it is not compatible with Basic Stamp, NETduino, any other interpreted/virtual machine microprocessors, or any processor running below 8MHz. For those platforms, check out our DotStar digital LED strips, which feature SPI-like I/O for easy integration with Pi, NETduino, and other processors.
Third, having this many pixels doesn't mean you have enough RAM to handle them all — the entire strip must be buffered in memory. We've found that many Arduino UNO projects have only around 1500 bytes of free RAM after all the extra features are included, which is enough for approximately 500 LED pixels. If you want to drive the full strip while including other libraries, use a Mega.
These LED strips are even more fun and dazzling. With 60 RGB LEDs per meter, you can control each LED individually! Yes, that's right — this is a digitally addressable LED strip. You can set the red, green, and blue components of each LED with 8-bit PWM precision (24-bit color per pixel). The LEDs are controlled by shift registers daisy-chained along the strip, so you can shorten or extend it. Only one digital output pin is needed to send data. PWM is built into each LED chip, so once you've set the colors, you can stop communicating with the strip and it will continue PWM-dimming all the LEDs for you.
The strip is made from flexible PCB material and comes with a waterproof jacket. It can be easily cut with wire cutters — cut lines are spaced every 0.65 inches (1.7cm), with one LED per cut segment. Simply solder to the 0.1-inch copper pads. Of course, you can also connect strips together to extend the length — just mind the current requirements! We have a 5V/2A power supply that should drive 1 meter (depending on usage), and a 5V/10A supply that can drive up to 4 meters (depending on usage). You must power these strips with a 5V DC supply — do not exceed 6V or you risk damaging the entire strip.
They come in 4-meter reels with 2- or 3-pin JST SM connectors and separate power/ground wires at each end. These strips are sold by the meter! If you purchase 4 meters at once, you'll receive a complete reel with both connectors. If you purchase less than 4 meters, you'll receive a single length cut from the reel, which may or may not have connectors.
To connect these strips, we recommend purchasing JST SM plug and socket cables — you'll need one of each, one wire for ground and one for signal. For the power wires, you may also want a 2.1mm DC jack for wiring up our wall adapter to power it.
Our detailed NeoPixel Überguide contains everything you need to use NeoPixels in any shape and size, including ready-to-use libraries and sample code for Arduino UNO/Duemilanove/Diecimila, Flora/Micro/Leonardo, Trinket/Gemma, Arduino Due, and Arduino Mega/ADK (all versions).
