Introduction

This compact sensor can rapidly detect the presence of nearby objects. While enabled, it continuously performs distance measurements and uses a single digital output to indicate whether an object has been detected within its sensing range. The output is driven low when an object is detected; otherwise, the output is high. Note that the sensor can only indicate whether an object is present within its line-of-sight detection range — it cannot report the object's specific distance. As shown in the diagram, hysteresis is present at the maximum distance threshold to help ensure clean switching as objects cross the threshold. The sensor can detect objects as close as approximately 1 mm from its surface. Unlike simple optical sensors that use reflected light intensity to detect objects, this sensor uses a short-range laser module to precisely measure the time required for its emitted eye-safe infrared laser pulses to travel to the nearest object and reflect back. This makes sensor performance largely independent of object reflectivity and ambient lighting conditions (though detection range may be reduced for objects with very low reflectivity).
