Introduction

The LM2596/LM2596HV series regulators are monolithic integrated circuits that provide all active functions for a buck switching regulator, capable of driving a 3A load with excellent line and load regulation. These devices are available in fixed output voltage versions of 3.3V, 5V, 12V, as well as an adjustable output version.

These regulators require a minimum number of external components, are simple to use, and include internal frequency compensation and a fixed-frequency oscillator. The LM2596/LM2596HV series operates at a switching frequency of 50kHz, allowing the use of smaller filter components than those required by lower-frequency switching regulators. The series is available in a standard 5-pin TO-220 package with multiple lead bend options, as well as a 5-pin TO-262 surface-mount package.

Several manufacturers offer standard inductor series optimized for the LM2596 series, which greatly simplifies the design of switching power supplies.

Additional features include a ±4% tolerance on output voltage under specified input voltage and output load conditions, and a ±15% tolerance on oscillator frequency. An external shutdown function is also included, with a typical standby current of 80μA. Self-protection features include a two-stage frequency-reducing current-limiting output switch and thermal shutdown, providing comprehensive protection under fault conditions.
