Introduction

The AEM10920 is a fully integrated, compact power management circuit that extracts DC power from energy harvesting sources, stores energy in a rechargeable storage element, and supplies power to the application circuit. A 5V input can also be used to charge the storage element (e.g., when it is depleted). This compact, ultra-efficient battery charger extends battery life and eliminates the need for a primary storage element across a wide range of applications. Thanks to maximum power point tracking and an ultra-low-power boost converter, the AEM10920 harvests the maximum available power from the source to charge the storage element. With its unique cold-start circuit, it can start up at input voltages as low as 275mV (minimum power of 1.5µW). Configurable protection levels define the voltage protection thresholds for the storage element to prevent overcharge and overdischarge, thereby avoiding damage. A transport mode is provided to prevent charging and discharging of the storage element during shipping or storage. A buck regulator with selectable output voltage efficiently powers the application circuit.
