Introduction

MX3902 is a dual full-bridge motor driver IC designed for low-voltage portable applications with bipolar stepper motors or brushed DC motors. It operates over a wide supply voltage range (2V to 7V), with a maximum continuous output current of 1A per channel (1.6A when both channels are used in parallel).

Four inputs (IN1 to IN4) control a bipolar stepper motor in full-step or half-step mode, or a DC motor in forward, reverse, or brake mode. The inputs support PWM signals at frequencies up to 50KHz for current or speed control.

As a power device, the IC has inherent on-resistance, and its thermal dissipation is closely related to load current, power transistor on-resistance, and ambient temperature. An on-chip thermal detection circuit continuously monitors the internal junction temperature. When the internal temperature exceeds the set threshold (typical 150°C), a shutdown signal is generated to turn off the power transistors and cut the load current, preventing the temperature from rising further due to abnormal operating conditions and avoiding serious safety hazards such as smoke or fire in the plastic package. An integrated thermal hysteresis circuit ensures that control of the power transistors is not restored until the IC has cooled back to a safe temperature.
