Introduction

GC8870 is a brushed DC motor driver IC designed for printers, appliances, industrial equipment, and other small machinery. Two logic inputs control an H-bridge driver composed of four NMOS transistors, enabling bidirectional motor control at peak currents up to 3.6A. Motor speed can be controlled by PWM of the inputs using current decay modes. Setting both inputs low places the motor driver into a low-power sleep mode. The GC8870 features integrated current regulation that limits current to a set level based on the analog input VREF and the voltage at the ISEN pin (proportional to the motor current flowing through an external sense resistor), significantly reducing system power requirements and eliminating the need for large bulk capacitors to maintain stable voltage, particularly during motor startup and stall conditions. The device provides comprehensive protection against faults and short circuits, including UVLO, OCP, and TSD, with automatic recovery once the fault condition is cleared.
