Introduction

The SLM8835 is a monolithic controller integrating a thermoelectric cooler controller. It contains a linear power stage, a PWM power stage, and two zero-drift, rail-to-rail op-amps. The linear controller works in conjunction with the PWM driver to control the internal power MOSFETs in an H-bridge configuration. By measuring the thermal sensor feedback voltage and using the integrated op-amps as a PID compensator to condition the signal, the SLM8835 drives current through the thermoelectric cooler to stabilize the temperature of a laser diode or passive component mounted on the TEC module at the programmed target temperature. The device supports both NTC thermistors and PTC RTDs. The target temperature is set via an analog voltage input, which can be sourced from a DAC or an external resistive voltage divider. The temperature control loop is stabilized by the built-in zero-drift chopper amplifiers performing PID compensation. An internal 2.50V reference provides a 1% accuracy output for biasing the thermistor temperature-sensing bridge and the resistive divider networks that set the maximum TEC current and voltage limits, applicable to both heating and cooling modes. With zero-drift chopper amplifiers operating through an autonomous analog temperature control loop, exceptional long-term temperature stability can be maintained.
