Encrypts and decrypts data implementing the National Bureau of Standards data encryption algorithm. High-speed operation with throughput exceeding 1.3 and 1.7 Mbytes/sec for the Am9518 and Am28068 respectively. Suitable for data rates in disk controllers, high-speed DMA, and telecommunications channels.
Supports three encryption options: Electronic Codebook mode (for disk applications), Cipher Block Chaining mode (for high-speed telecommunications), and Cipher Feedback mode (for low-to-medium speed byte-oriented communications).
Three independent on-chip key registers for the encrypt key, decrypt key, and master key improve system security and throughput by reducing the need for frequent key reloading. Three independent data ports provide flexible interfacing and enhanced security. The DCP uses a master port, slave port, and key port. Users can program the functions of these three ports to provide simple interfacing with Am28000 and Am2900 systems and achieve hardware separation of encrypted data, plaintext data, and keys.
The Am9518/Am28068 Data Encryption Processor is an N-channel silicon-gate LSI device containing the circuitry required for data encryption and decryption using the National Bureau of Standards encryption algorithm. It is designed for use in a variety of environments, including dedicated controllers, communications concentrators, terminals, and general-purpose processor systems such as peripheral task processors.
The DCP provides high throughput using Cipher Feedback, Electronic Codebook, or Cipher Block Chaining operating modes. Separate ports for key input, plaintext data, and ciphertext data are provided for enhanced security.
The system communicates with the DCP via the master port input commands and auxiliary control lines. Once configured, data can be transferred through the DCP at high speed as input, output, and encryption activities proceed concurrently. In certain system configurations, external DMA control can readily be used to enhance throughput.
The device is designed to connect directly to the Am28000 CPU bus and can be connected to the 2900, MC68000, 8086, 8085, and 8051 processor families with minimal external logic.
