Introduction

MaxLinear's Ethernet switch GSW141 is a highly integrated, low-power, non-blocking six-port Gigabit Ethernet switch featuring four tri-speed Ethernet PHYs, one tri-speed SGMII interface, and one tri-speed RGMII interface. The GSW141 comes in a very compact 8mm x 8mm package to minimize PCB footprint. Two package variants are available. Refer to the Package Outline for package details.

Each GbE PHY supports 10BASE-Te, 100BASE-TX, and 1000BASE-T standards and is characterized by low power consumption. Energy Efficient Ethernet support further reduces power dissipation in idle mode. Wake-on-LAN functionality enables power savings at the system level as well. The integrated termination low-EMI line driver simplifies PCB design.

Port 5 of the GSW141 supports a tri-speed (10/100/1000 Mbps) SGMII interface for connecting to an external PHY, SFP module, or the MAC of an external chip.

Port 6 of the GSW141 supports a tri-speed (10/100/1000 Mbps) RGMII interface for connecting to an external PHY or the MAC of an external chip.

The GSW141 can be configured via pin strapping, MDIO interface, UART interface, SPI interface, or optionally by connecting an external EEPROM.

In addition, a seventh 802.3 Gigabit Ethernet MAC is integrated for packet insertion and extraction, allowing an external controller to send and receive Ethernet packets through the management interface.

The GSW141 supports up to three LEDs per GbE PHY. Intelligent LED brightness control logic is integrated to conserve power. LED brightness can be adjusted via a button or dynamically varied based on the ambient light intensity measured by an external light sensor.

128 KB embedded packet buffer SRAM is integrated with support for 9 KB jumbo frames. The GSW141 integrates a 4K-entry VLAN table for 802.1Q port-based, tag-based, and protocol-based VLAN operations. It also supports double VLAN tagging, insertion, removal, and translation. The GSW141 supports 2048 MAC addresses and uses a 4-way hash algorithm for address lookup, auto-learning, and auto-aging.

Programmable parsing and a powerful classification engine enable future-proof designs capable of supporting multiple traffic types. The GSW141 supports IPv4 and IPv6 multicast forwarding, including IGMPv1/v2/v3 and MLD v1/v2 snooping.

The GSW141 features an advanced QoS architecture that prioritizes switch traffic for different classes of applications based on multiple packet fields. Multiple queues per port are supported with strict or weighted round-robin scheduling and rate shaping. VLAN PCP and IP DSCP remarking are supported. The GSW141 also supports timestamp indication compliant with IEEE 1588v2 and IEEE 802.1AS.

The product covers a wide range of application complexity, from basic standalone switches and set-top boxes to complex home gateways. The GSW141 is designed for video/audio applications in the digital home, such as IPTV, ADSL2+/VDSL2/PON IAD, gateways, wireless routers, cable, storage, and HomePlug AV applications.
