Introduction
The MitySOM-AM62 series is a highly configurable small form-factor processor card featuring the Texas Instruments Sitara AM62x processor. The module includes (optional) eMMC flash, (optional) octal- or quad-SPI NOR flash, and a DDR4 RAM memory subsystem. The MitySOM-AM62 provides a complete and flexible CPU infrastructure for highly integrated embedded systems.
The onboard AM62x processor offers up to quad-core Cortex-A53 64-bit RISC processors with NEON SIMD coprocessors. This MPU is capable of running feature-rich real-time operating systems with the software APIs required by modern system designers. The ARM architecture supports multiple operating systems, including Linux and Android.
In addition to the Cortex-A53, the AM62x series offers a single-core Arm Cortex-M4F MCU running up to 400 MHz, as well as dual-core 32-bit programmable real-time units capable of operating at up to 333 MHz. The Cortex-M4F and PRU are RISC processors that operate independently of the main Cortex-A53 MPU complex, with access to all on-chip peripherals and external memory. They may be used for any purpose. Typical applications for the M4F may include safety-critical software operations or real-time processing of connected peripherals. PRU applications include implementing custom industrial serial or Ethernet protocols such as PROFIBUS or EtherCAT.
The AM62x processor incorporates a dedicated 16-bit DDR4 SDRAM memory interface. The MitySOM-AM62 integrates up to 4 GB of DDR4 RAM on the module. The memory bus interface supports burst transfer rates of up to 3200 MB/s.
Up to 128 GB of onboard eMMC flash is connected to the AM62x processor via the MMC0 interface peripheral. eMMC flash is typically used to store the following types of data: bootloaders, ARM Linux/Android embedded root file systems, runtime ARM software, and runtime application data.
Up to 256 MB of onboard octal- or quad-SPI NOR flash is connected to the AM62x via the OSPI/QSPI peripheral interface. The AM62x also provides additional SPI interfaces, both of which are accessible on the SO-DIMM connector. This memory may be ideal for applications requiring higher reliability/endurance or faster access speeds.
The MitySOM-AM62 includes a (minimum) 256 × 8-bit EEPROM for storing module configuration data. This EEPROM is connected to the AM62x via the I2C0 interface and is not available for customer use.
The AM62x makes extensive use of functional pin multiplexing, providing a highly configurable device adaptable to a wide range of applications. The interfaces and features available to users through the edge connector interface are as follows: 2 USB 2.0 high-speed ports supporting host/peripheral/dual-role mode, 3 CAN-FD controller area network ports, 3 multichannel audio serial ports, 2 industrial gigabit Ethernet MACs, 2 SD/SDIO 4-bit ports with UHS-I support, 2 OLDI/LVDS display drivers, 1 24-bit RGB display driver, 1 4-lane MIPI CSI with DPHY, 3 enhanced capture modules, 3 enhanced PWM modules, 3 32-bit enhanced quadrature pulse encoder modules, 4 timers, 3 SPI ports, 7 UART ports, 3 I2C ports, and a general-purpose memory controller interface.
