Introduction

This sensor measures soil volumetric water content (VWC), soil temperature, and soil electrical conductivity (EC). VWC is used to determine the amount of water stored in the soil, while EC can be used to determine the salt level (salinity) in the soil. These parameters are important indicators of soil fertility and health, which ultimately affect the plants growing in it. Excessive soil salinity makes it difficult for plants to absorb water even when soil moisture is high, and can eventually "burn" the plants. Meanwhile, excessive moisture in the soil is not only harmful to plants, but also wastes water resources and places an additional burden on the environment.

Plants grow best in their preferred environment — within the optimal range of soil moisture, temperature, and EC levels. It is important for growers to obtain data on these parameters to understand what actions need to be taken to ensure plant health and improve yield.

This soil moisture, temperature, and EC LoRaWAN sensor is designed to industry standards with high accuracy, high sensitivity, and durability. It is equipped with a LoRaWAN module for cable-free long-range data transmission. The sensor integrates three sensing elements (soil moisture, soil temperature, and soil EC) with automatic temperature compensation, ensuring measurement accuracy regardless of changes in environmental conditions.

By measuring the dielectric constant of soil, it can measure soil VWC independent of various soil types. Measurements comply with current international soil moisture measurement standards.

The stainless steel probe can be permanently inserted into the soil for convenient long-term and rapid testing. This soil sensor achieves an IP66 protection rating, making it highly robust and durable. It is suitable for long-term monitoring of soil moisture, temperature, and EC in professional environmental monitoring scenarios such as scientific experiments, water-saving irrigation, horticulture, greenhouses, outdoor planting, agronomy, golf course turf management, forestry, and precision agriculture. It can also be applied in water, nutrient solutions, and other substrates where EC level measurement is required.

The device features a built-in SX1276-based LoRa transmitter for long-range transmission, along with an integrated 3-in-1 sensor and a custom battery. It is specifically designed and optimized for applications where a battery powers the end device for multiple years. To minimize power consumption, the device wakes up, transmits the collected soil moisture and temperature data to a gateway, and then enters sleep mode.

Under optimal conditions, the battery is expected to last more than 6 years, depending on environmental factors and data transmission intervals. Note that the default interval is once per hour. If you wish to change the data upload interval, please refer to this document.

To withstand harsh conditions, the LoRaWAN module is designed to industry standards and features an IP66 waterproof enclosure that protects the device from UV radiation, rain, and direct sunlight.

SenseCAP sensors adopt a modular design, integrating the data logger with a sensor probe that can be replaced with other SenseCAP sensor probes.
