Introduction

MP39 is a cost-effective high-voltage MOSFET power operational amplifier built from surface-mount components on a thermally conductive yet electrically isolated substrate. Despite its low cost, the MP39 offers many features and performance specifications found only in more expensive hybrid power amplifiers. The metal substrate enables the MP39 to dissipate up to 125 watts of power, with a supply voltage range of up to ±50V (100V total). An optional boost voltage input allows the small-signal section of the amplifier to operate at a higher supply voltage than the high-current output stage. The amplifier is then biased to achieve near-rail linear swing at high currents, enabling higher-efficiency operation. External compensation allows performance to be tailored to user requirements. Four-wire sense technology enables current limiting without regard to internal or external milliohm parasitic resistances in the output lines. An Iq pin is provided to disable the quiescent current of the output stage, at which point the output stage operates in Class C, reducing quiescent power dissipation. This is useful in applications where output crossover distortion is not critical.
