Introduction
To address the need for low clamping voltage, a vertical clamping voltage power TVS has been developed — the MX2200TVS series, featuring Flat clamping characteristics with a clamping voltage closer to the operating voltage. The MX2200TVS can reliably shunt fault currents up to 55A, protecting systems against high-power transient surges or lightning strikes, and meeting common industrial signal line EMC requirements. It employs a unique feedback mechanism to ensure precise vertical clamping during fault events, keeping the system contact voltage below 30V, allowing designers to select low-voltage-tolerance system components to reduce system cost and complexity. Additionally, the compact DFN2×2-6 package is designed for space-constrained applications, while the extremely low device leakage current and capacitance minimize impact on the protected line. The MX2200TVS is a precision clamp that maintains a low, flat clamping voltage during transient overvoltage events such as surges, protecting the system with zero overshoot. Its flat clamping characteristic keeps the clamping voltage very low, preventing stress on downstream circuits and enabling end-equipment designers to reduce costs by using low-cost, low-voltage-rated downstream ICs. At a 22V turn-off voltage, the MX2200TVS exhibits extremely low leakage current, making it suitable for applications requiring low leakage current and low power consumption. The wide operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C makes it suitable for most applications, and the compact package enables use in small devices while saving board space. The MX2200TVS also integrates IEC 61000-4-2 Level 4 ESD protection to safeguard devices against various transient conditions. Unlike conventional diodes, the MX2200TVS exhibits very little derating of maximum power dissipation at temperatures up to 125°C, delivering reliable performance. During large transient excursions, the MX2200TVS begins clamping the input signal to protect downstream circuits, but leakage current may occur when the input signal slew rate is high. To reduce power dissipation and avoid signal distortion, it is recommended to keep the slew rate of any input signal on the MX2200TVS below 2.5 V/μs at room temperature and below 0.7 V/μs at 125°C. The MX2200TVS can be used to protect USB Type-C Vbus inputs; without input protection, lightning strikes, coupling, hot-plug ringing, or other faults can raise the input voltage to hundreds of volts for several microseconds, damaging the device. The MX2200TVS can be configured in either unidirectional or bidirectional configurations; in the bidirectional configuration, the operating voltage can reach ±22V — similar to the unidirectional configuration but with a slight increase in breakdown voltage and clamping voltage. The MX2200TVS is a clamping device that requires no power supply; care must be taken not to exceed the recommended VIN voltage range (0V to 22V) to ensure proper device operation. For optimal placement, the device should be positioned as close as possible to the connector; PCB designers should minimize the possibility of EMI coupling by routing the protected lines as straight as possible and using large-radius rounded corners to eliminate sharp angles on the protected lines.
