Introduction

The Parallax PING))) ultrasonic distance sensor provides precise non-contact distance measurement over a range of approximately 2 cm to 3 meters. It connects easily to microcontrollers such as the BASIC Stamp, Propeller chip, or Arduino using only a single I/O pin. The PING))) sensor operates by emitting a pulse of ultrasonic sound (at a frequency well above the range of human hearing) and providing an output pulse corresponding to the time required for the echo to return to the sensor. By measuring the width of the echo pulse, the distance to the target can be calculated with ease.
