Introduction

Variable Reluctance Speed Sensors (VRS) are simple, robust devices that operate without an external voltage source. A permanent magnet within the sensor establishes a fixed magnetic field. When a ferrous target or gear passes the sensor's sensing face, it alters the magnetic flux of the field. This change in magnetic flux generates a signal voltage. The output signal of a VRS sensor is an AC voltage, typically expressed as peak-to-peak voltage (Vp-p). The sensor output resembles the waveform shown in Figure 1. Signal frequency is proportional to speed. As shown in Figure 2, the amplitude of the output signal increases with exciter speed. Output amplitude also depends on the air gap — the greater the sensing distance, the lower the amplitude.
