Introduction

This device features advanced proximity measurement and digital ambient light sensing (ALS) capabilities. Its package is designed for a single small aperture configuration. This slim, compact module integrates an infrared LED and a factory-calibrated LED driver. The proximity detection function achieves object detection (e.g., a mobile device screen approaching a user's ear) by using a photodiode to detect reflected infrared energy emitted by the integrated LED. Detection/release events are interrupt-driven, occurring when proximity detection results exceed the upper and/or lower threshold settings. The proximity detection engine features an offset adjustment register to compensate for unwanted infrared energy reflections at the sensor. Proximity detection results are further improved by automatically subtracting ambient light. The ALS detection function provides photopic light intensity data. The ALS photodiode features UV and infrared blocking filters along with a dedicated data converter, producing 16-bit data. This architecture allows applications to accurately measure ambient light, enabling devices to calculate illuminance for display backlight control.
