Variable Reluctance Sensors (VRS) are simple, durable devices that operate without an external voltage source. The permanent magnet within the sensor establishes a fixed magnetic field. When a ferrous target or gear passes the sensing face of the sensor, it alters the magnetic flux of the field. This change in magnetic flux generates a signal voltage. The output signal of a VRS sensor is an AC voltage, typically expressed as peak-to-peak voltage (Vp-p). The sensor output resembles the waveform shown in Figure 1. Signal frequency is proportional to speed. As shown in Figure 2, the amplitude of the output signal increases with exciter speed. Output amplitude also depends on the sensing gap — the greater the sensing distance, the lower the amplitude. The device is designed to be installed in a 5/8 in - 18 UNF threaded hole and is secured with a jam nut. The pickup should be adjusted to achieve a typical gap of 0.010 in (0.25 mm) between the sensor and the gear. This adjustment will provide excellent sensitivity and resolution. The air gap between the sensor and the exciter must be set to ensure the target does not strike the sensing pole piece. The sensor is equipped with a 2-pin integral connector.
Engine speed measurement (rail vehicles, aircraft, automobiles, vessels, buses and trucks), wheel slip measurement for locomotives and automobiles, gear speed measurement (camshafts, crankshafts), flow measurement (turbines, flow meters)
