Introduction

KP200 is a pressure sensor designed to detect side impacts in passenger vehicles. In this application, the pressure sensor is mounted in a door module inside the vehicle's side door. When the door is compressed due to a side impact, the KP200 provides a signal pulse proportional to the pressure change inside the door (Δp / p0). The amplitude of the signal pulse is independent of ambient pressure but depends on the relative pressure change. This is achieved by dividing the pressure change by the ambient pressure, a division performed on-chip. The ambient pressure is derived from the pressure measurement through a low-pass filter. The sensor outputs the relative pressure as a digitally Manchester-encoded signal. This cost-optimized configuration allows the sensor to operate autonomously within a pressure satellite without any additional logic ICs. In normal operating mode, continuous internal range checks are performed.
