Introduction

KP204 is a pressure sensor designed for side impact detection in passenger vehicles. In this application, the pressure sensor is mounted in the door module inside the vehicle's side door. When the door is compressed due to a side impact, the KP204 provides a signal pulse proportional to the pressure change Δp / p0 inside the door. The amplitude of the signal pulse is independent of ambient pressure but depends on the relative pressure change. This is achieved by dividing the pressure change by the ambient pressure. This division operation is performed on-chip. The ambient pressure is calculated by applying a low-pass filter to the pressure signal. The sensor outputs the relative pressure as a digitally Manchester-encoded signal. This cost-optimized configuration allows the sensor to operate autonomously within a pressure satellite without any additional logic ICs. In normal operating mode, continuous internal range checks are performed.
