Introduction

Whisker.Block is a long-range wireless sensor available in multiple I/O and power configurations. These sensor modules utilize proprietary long-range wireless communication technology to ensure reliable and stable operation. They can be configured for either battery-powered or externally-powered operation. When powered by the internal battery, the sensor can operate for 10 years or longer, depending on sensor usage and configuration. Each sensor is housed in a durable IP67-rated enclosure that supports multiple mounting options. External sensors connect via one or two 4-pin M8-type waterproof connectors, depending on the number of external channels configured. The Whisker.Block's long range, exceptional battery life, and flexible I/O configuration make it an ideal choice for virtually any IoT application. The Whisker.Block is internally powered by a 3.7V, 5.2A·H lithium chloride battery pack, which — assuming an update interval of 5 minutes — should provide more than 10 years of service life before battery replacement is required. They are available in multiple configurations with several external channels for various analog and digital inputs. In an unobstructed outdoor line-of-sight environment, assuming a receive antenna height of 3.0 meters, the sensor should be capable of communicating at distances exceeding 0.8 km. If the receive antenna is elevated to 6.1 meters or higher, the communication range should increase to over 1.6 km. When used in environments where line-of-sight is unavailable or where numerous reflective obstacles exist in the transmission path, communication range will decrease due to multipath fading. The transmission range of the Whisker.Block cannot be predicted for any specific situation, so users are advised to utilize site survey tools to ensure coverage wherever sensors are deployed.
