Introduction

Whisper Blocks are long-range wireless sensors available in multiple I/O and power configurations. These sensor modules use proprietary long-range wireless communication technology to ensure reliable and stable operation. They can be configured for battery-powered or externally powered operation. When powered by the internal battery, the sensor can operate for 10 years or more depending on sensor usage and configuration. Each sensor is housed in a durable IP67-rated enclosure with support for multiple mounting options. Depending on the number of configured external channels, external sensors connect via one or two 4-pin M8-type waterproof connectors. The Whisker.Block's long range, exceptional battery life, and flexible I/O configuration make it an ideal choice for virtually any IoT application. This Whisker.Block is internally powered by a 3.7V, 5.2A-H LiThCl battery pack, which — assuming a 5-minute update interval — should provide over 10 years of service life before battery replacement is required. They are available in multiple configurations with several external channels for various analog and digital inputs. In an unobstructed outdoor line-of-sight environment, assuming a receive antenna height of 3.0 meters, the sensor should be capable of communicating at distances exceeding 0.8 km. If the receive antenna is raised to 6.1 meters or higher, the communication range should increase to over 1.6 km. When used in environments where line-of-sight is unavailable or where numerous reflective obstacles exist in the transmission path, communication range will decrease due to multipath fading. The transmission range of the Whisker.Block cannot be predicted for any specific situation, so users are advised to use site survey tools to ensure coverage wherever sensors are deployed. This Whisker.Block is configured with two internal channels — battery voltage and ambient temperature — and one external channel.
