Introduction

The FSS Series force sensors feature a compact, commercial-grade package that delivers precise and reliable force sensing performance at a cost-effective price. The sensors employ proven sensing technology utilizing a dedicated piezoresistive micromachined silicon sensing element. The low-power, unamplified, uncompensated Wheatstone bridge circuit design provides an inherently stable millivolt output across the force range. The operating principle of the force sensor is based on the increase in resistance of silicon-implanted piezoresistors as they flex under any applied force. The sensor concentrates the applied force through a stainless steel ball, transferring it directly to the silicon sensing element. The change in resistance is proportional to the applied force. This change in circuit resistance results in a corresponding change in the millivolt output level.
