Introduction

The liquid level sensor enhanced series employs a phototransistor trigger to provide a digital output indicating the presence or absence of liquid. Its operating principle is based on total internal reflection. A LED and a phototransistor are housed within the plastic dome at the sensor head. When no liquid is present, light emitted by the LED is reflected within the dome onto the phototransistor. When liquid covers the dome, the effective refractive index at the dome-liquid interface changes, causing a portion of the LED light to escape. As a result, the amount of light received by the phototransistor decreases and the output state changes, indicating the presence of liquid. This liquid level detection method is extremely fast, with near-instantaneous response for water.
