Introduction

Voltage output analog current sensors are designed for any AC current monitoring application, intended to monitor the normal operation of specific equipment. All voltage output current sensors employ an "averaging" current measurement method, suitable for applications monitoring pure sinusoidal AC waveforms with little or no distortion/noise on the conductor. Application scenarios may include monitoring resistive loads (such as incandescent lamps or heating elements) and any single-speed linear loads. Voltage output current sensors are available in both solid-core and split-core versions, and also include a patented 35mm DIN rail mounting foot for easy installation in panel-mount applications. The solid-core version is ideal for new installations or OEM applications that are cost-sensitive, require lower trip points, and have environmental concerns such as dust and moisture. Split-core current sensors are ideal for retrofit applications and use in service technicians' vehicles, as one or two components can cover most applications and can be easily installed without disconnecting any wires. For best results, voltage output current sensors should not be used in switching power supply or variable speed drive applications due to their limited operating frequency range. For variable speed drive applications or applications where the waveform contains distortion/noise, ACI recommends using the A/CTA2-RMS or A/SCTA2-RMS series sensors, which require a 24VDC power supply for the current sensor and output a 4-20mA signal. A 249-ohm or 499-ohm 1-watt resistor can be used to convert the 4-20mA signal to a 1-5 or 2-10VDC output signal usable by a building management system or PLC.
