Introduction

The Parallax WX Wi-Fi module provides a new way to add Wi-Fi connectivity to microcontroller projects. It can operate as a standalone wireless access point (AP), as a station (STA) within another Wi-Fi network, or even briefly in both modes simultaneously when joining another network. In either mode, it serves its own configuration page and user-created web pages, enabling devices to interact with the microcontroller via the Wi-Fi module. When connected to a Wi-Fi network with internet access, it can also send and receive various TCP/IP messages for IoT projects. The module additionally provides its own firmware upgrade page, allowing users to select and upload the latest open-source firmware versions or even application-specific variants. ESP-WROOM-02 is a low-power 32-bit MCU Wi-Fi module based on the ESP8266 chip, featuring an embedded TCP/IP network stack, integrated 16 Mbits SPI flash, and the ability to operate in low-power connection modes such as DTIM10 mode at 1.2mW. ESP-WROOM-02 is certified by FCC, CE, KCC, TELEC, LCIE, and IC, achieving the best FCC test results in the IoT module industry. The DIP version plugs directly into the 2 x 10 x 2mm socket on the Propeller Activity Board WX. A linear 3.3V LDO regulator powers the ESP8266 microcontroller and sets the logic level voltage.

Features

• 32420S (right) is a breadboard-friendly, 5V and 3.3V compatible, 0.1" SIP package for BASIC Stamp, Arduino, and Propeller.
• 32420D (left) is a 3.3V, 2mm DIP package designed for sockets on the Propeller Activity Board, including the original 32910 and WX #32912. These modules are not compatible with XBee adapter boards. Supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi access via the ESP8266-WROOM-02 module (FCC and CE certified).
• Transparent serial communication mode for wireless microcontroller programming and debugging (Activity Board WX).
• Command serial communication mode for exchanging information with a host microcontroller.
• 3 Wi-Fi modes: (AP) as an access point for up to four devices to join; (STA) as a station on another Wi-Fi network; and STA+AP station plus access point for joining another Wi-Fi network.
• Micro web server allows other devices to access configuration and user-created/uploaded web pages in STA or AP mode.
• ~1 MB user file system for storing web pages and other content. Built-in configuration web pages for setup, networking, file upload, and over-the-air firmware updates.
• Over-the-air (OTA) web page upload via a simple web interface. Upload one or more pages to the module's user file system. The Wi-Fi module will serve these pages to computers and mobile devices that join its network (AP) or share the same network (STA). This enables your microcontroller project to interact with computers, tablets, phones, and other devices on the network.
• OTA firmware upgrade, also via a simple web interface. This keeps your Wi-Fi module ready with the latest features and projects contributed by the open-source community.
• Supports HTTP (server), WebSocket (server), and TCP (client) connections.
• HTTP/WebSocket enables your Wi-Fi module to exchange data with other devices on the network through user-created web pages it serves. TCP supports connections to other devices for low-level communication, such as building your own HTTP requests to web pages worldwide.
• Power, association, data-in, and data-out LEDs visible from both sides of the PCB.
