The device is a wireless MCU primarily designed for Bluetooth Low Energy. It belongs to the SimpleLink CC26xx family of cost-effective, ultra-low-power 2.4 GHz RF devices. Its extremely low active RF and MCU current consumption, combined with low-power mode leakage, ensures exceptional battery life, making it suitable for small coin cell battery-powered applications and energy harvesting applications.
The SimpleLink Bluetooth Low Energy CC2640 device features a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M3 core running at 48 MHz (same frequency as the main processor) and offers a rich peripheral feature set, including a unique ultra-low-power sensor controller. This sensor controller is ideal for interfacing with external sensors and for autonomously collecting analog and digital data while the rest of the system remains in sleep mode. As a result, the CC2640 device is an ideal choice for applications where battery life, compact size, and ease of use are priorities.
The power and clock management and wireless system of the CC2640 wireless MCU require specific configuration and software handling to operate correctly, which has been implemented in TI-RTOS. TI recommends using this software framework for all application development targeting this device. The complete TI-RTOS and device drivers are available free of charge in source code form.
The Bluetooth Low Energy controller is embedded in ROM and runs independently on an ARM Cortex-M0 processor. This architecture improves overall system performance and power consumption while freeing up flash memory for applications.
The Bluetooth protocol stack is available free of charge.
