Introduction

The AFE7799 is a high-performance multi-channel transceiver integrating four direct-upconversion transmitter chains, four direct-downconversion receiver chains, and two wideband RF-sampling digital auxiliary chains (feedback paths). The high dynamic range of the transmitter and receiver chains enables generation and reception of 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G signals for wireless base stations. Low power dissipation and large-scale channel integration make the AFE7799 well-suited for 4G and 5G massive MIMO base stations where both power and size are constrained. The wideband, high-dynamic-range feedback paths can assist digital predistortion (DPD) of power amplifiers in the transmitter chains. The high-speed SerDes helps reduce the number of lanes required for incoming and outgoing data. The feedback path is based on an RF-sampling architecture and features an input RF DSA for driving a 14-bit 3Gsps RF ADC. The direct-sampling architecture provides an inherently wideband receiver chain and simplifies TX chain loss calibration. Each feedback path integrates two independent NCOs that enable fast switching between two observed RF input bands.

• Each receiver channel includes two analog peak power detectors and multiple digital power detectors to assist external or internal autonomous AGC on the receiver channel, along with an RF overload detector for device reliability protection
• Integrated QMC (quadrature mismatch correction) algorithm continuously monitors and corrects RX chain I and Q imbalance mismatch without injecting any dedicated signals or performing offline calibration
• Each transmitter chain features two 14-bit, 3Gsps IQ DACs, followed by a programmable reconstruction and DAC image rejection filter and an IQ modulator for driving a wideband RF amplifier with 39dB range gain control
• TX chain integrates QMC and LO leakage cancellation algorithms, utilizing the feedback path to continuously track and correct TX chain IQ mismatch and LO leakage
