Introduction

The TDA7708 is a single-chip, full-CMOS AM/FM tuner designed for terrestrial radio broadcast receivers. It is a fully integrated and optimized RF tuner delivering an AM/FM solution for automotive-grade receivers and other applications (with support for HD-Radio when paired with STMicroelectronics' external STA680 coprocessor). The TDA7708 combines advanced performance with minimal external components, making it ideal for integration into car radios and other radio equipment where performance, quality, reliability, and cost are critical requirements. It overcomes the major challenges of very low and zero-IF receivers through advanced circuit and implementation techniques, employing multiple front-end low-noise amplifiers covering the AM LW/MW/SW bands and the full FM band, along with advanced AGC amplifiers and mixer stages. Following on-chip IF filtering, the TDA7708 digitizes the signal using a high-dynamic-range ADC, enabling multipath noise suppression, integrated RDS decoding, and HD-Radio channel filtering. In addition, the TDA7708 requires only a very small firmware download to boot the IC, making it particularly well-suited for systems with limited microcontroller code storage capacity.
