Introduction

The GPS/GLONASS evaluation kit EVA5100-A facilitates convenient evaluation of Maestro's SiRFstarV GPS/GLONASS receiver module A5100-A, providing quick access to the module's serial port and most important I/O lines. The kit serves three primary purposes: as a module function demonstration package, powering the A5100-A GPS/GLONASS receiver module via a USB connector and connecting a GPS/GLONASS antenna with a clear sky view to obtain NMEA output containing position information; as a reference design for module system integration, with schematics illustrating the fundamental approach to integrating a GPS/GLONASS module into an application or system; and supporting convenient ad-hoc design integration, where signals available on the evaluation kit allow direct integration into peripheral systems, making it an ideal development tool. The EVA5100-A specifically demonstrates that connecting an active GPS/GLONASS antenna to the antenna input delivers superior GPS/GLONASS performance. The kit includes the following components: evaluation board, active GPS/GLONASS antenna, USB cable for PC connection, and a CD containing complete documentation and SiRFLive software. The evaluation board contains ESD-sensitive components and must be handled with care. Quick-start steps are as follows: connect the EVA5100-A to a PC using the USB cable and install the drivers; connect the active GPS/GLONASS antenna to the antenna connector on the evaluation board, ensuring the antenna has a clear view of the sky; ensure all DIP switches are in the ON position, except the DIP switch corresponding to the GPIO7 NC pin, which must be set to OFF; copy the SiRFLive software files from the CD and run the application, then select the correct communication port connected to the GPS/GLONASS receiver in the software to connect and visualize.
