Introduction

This 2.4 GHz SMD, metal-backed, low-profile mini chip antenna (part number 2450AT42E010B) typically requires a metal layer directly beneath it to function properly, though exceptions may exist. The antenna is designed for short-range network applications such as small coin-cell batteries, wearables, IoT, 2.4 BLE, 802.11, ISM, and Zigbee, targeting scenarios where metal or battery/display covers the full PCB length or sides, a metal layer must be present directly beneath the antenna, and there is no space for a conventional antenna metal clearance area. Evaluation boards 1 and 2 are used to demonstrate the performance differences achievable across different substrate thicknesses.
