Introduction

APSEMI photorelay products provide an interface from microprocessors to control AC and DC load switching, while providing an isolation barrier between logic and power. This functionality is common to all relays, but photorelays offer significant advantages over mechanical relays, including unlimited lifespan (no mechanical or electrical life limitations), bounce-free switching, higher speed and high-frequency switching, higher sensitivity (lower power consumption), immunity to EMI or RFI, no arcing, bouncing, or noise, greater resistance to vibration and shock, AC or DC load switching capability, compact package size, short-circuit protection, latch-type operation, and low off-state leakage current. APSEMI photorelays operate by driving an input IR LED with a low input current (<5mA). The LED is optically coupled to a photodiode array, which generates current at the output stage to enable AC and DC output load switching. Photorelays typically employ a light stack to achieve switching functionality, eliminating mechanical wear and delivering consistent, reliable switching performance.
