Introduction

Optical relays are reliable, technologically advanced logic-to-power interface devices. Their fundamental function is to accept low-current signals from a microprocessor to control switching of AC and DC loads, while providing an isolation barrier between logic and power. An optical relay drives an input infrared LED with a low-level input current (less than 5mA); the LED is optically coupled to a photodiode array die, which in turn generates a photovoltage to power two MOSFETs typically connected in a source-to-source configuration, enabling switching of AC and DC output loads. Since optical relays perform their switching function essentially by moving photons, no mechanical wear occurs, delivering consistent and reliable switching operation.
