Introduction

APSEMI photorelays enable microprocessor control of AC and DC load switching while providing an isolation barrier between logic and power. This functionality is common to all relays, but photorelays offer distinct advantages over mechanical relays, including unlimited lifespan (no mechanical or electrical life limitations), bounce-free switching, higher speed and high-frequency switching, greater sensitivity (lower power consumption), immunity to EMI or RFI, no arcing, bouncing, or noise, superior resistance to vibration and shock, AC or DC load switching capability, and compact package size. APSEMI photorelays drive an input infrared LED via low-level input current (<5 mA), which is optically coupled to a photodiode array to enable switching of AC and DC output loads. Since photorelays have no mechanical wear, they deliver consistent and reliable switching performance.
