Introduction

APSEMI photo relays are reliable, technologically advanced logic-to-power interface devices. Their primary function is to receive low-current signals from a microprocessor to control the switching of AC and DC loads, while providing an isolation barrier between logic and power. Although this function is common to all relays, photo relays offer significant advantages over their mechanical counterparts, including: long service life (no mechanical or electrical life limitations), bounce-free switching, higher speed and higher-frequency switching capability, greater sensitivity (lower power consumption), immunity to EMI or RFI, no arcing, bouncing, or noise generation, superior resistance to vibration and shock, AC and DC load switching capability, and compact package size. APSEMI photo relays operate by receiving a low-level input current (<5mA) that drives an infrared LED, which is optically coupled to a photodiode array die. This IC then generates a photovoltage to power two MOSFETs, typically connected in a source-to-source configuration, enabling switching of AC and DC output loads. Photo relays essentially perform their switching function by moving photons, producing no mechanical wear and delivering consistent, reliable switching operation.
