Introduction

Opto-relays are reliable, technically advanced logic-to-power interface devices. Their fundamental function is to receive low-current signals from a microprocessor to control switching of AC and DC loads, while providing an isolation barrier between logic and power. Although this function is common to all relays, opto-relays offer significant advantages over their mechanical counterparts. An opto-relay operates by accepting a low-level input current (<5mA) to drive an input infrared LED, which is optically coupled to a photodiode array die. This die in turn generates a photovoltage to power two MOSFETs typically connected in a source-to-source configuration, enabling switching of AC and DC output loads. Opto-relays essentially perform their switching function by moving photons, with no mechanical wear, thus delivering consistent and reliable switching operation.
