Introduction

Photorelay devices are reliable, technically advanced logic-to-power interface components. Their fundamental function is to accept low-current signals from a microprocessor to control switching of AC and DC loads, while providing an isolation barrier between logic and power. A photorelay operates by accepting a low-level input current (< 5mA) to drive an input infrared LED, which is optically coupled to a photodiode array die. This die in turn generates a photovoltage to power two MOSFETs typically connected in a source-to-source configuration, enabling switching of AC and DC output loads. Photorelays essentially perform their switching function by moving photons, producing no mechanical wear and delivering consistent, reliable switching. Compared to mechanical relays, photorelays offer significant advantages, including: long service life (unlimited mechanical and electrical life), bounce-free switching, higher speed and higher frequency switching, greater sensitivity (lower power consumption), immunity to EMI or RFI, no arcing, bounce, or noise, superior resistance to vibration and shock, AC and DC load switching, and compact package size.
