Introduction

Safety relays contain forcibly guided contacts, also known as captive, locked, or positive-guided contacts. Forcibly guided contacts in a relay means that contacts within a contact set must be mechanically linked together, making it impossible for normally open and normally closed contacts to be closed simultaneously. The contacts are linked such that no single contact in the relay can change state without changing the state of all other contacts in that relay. Throughout the entire service life of the relay, a minimum air gap of at least 0.5 mm must be maintained between open contacts, even in the event of a failure. Forcibly guided operation of the relay contacts must always be maintained, even if relay components fail.
