Matrix Orbital DevDevil is a product development board that delivers all the functionality of an alphanumeric display in a project-friendly package. Both 2×20 and 4×20 screen models are available in multiple color options.
All DevDevil products include the same 6 general purpose outputs and 5×5 keypad input as their production counterparts. In addition to the standard 5V, 20mA output, indicator LEDs can be enabled alongside each general purpose output to provide status indication. Alternate keys have also been added in a tactile layout, sharing the same pins as the standard keypad. The keypad interface shares the same power and ground pins to support optional grounding or backlight functionality.
The DevDevil also provides RS232, USB, TTL, and I2C protocols via dynamic switch blocks, rather than the more rigid solder jumpers found on production models. However, the maximum communication speeds for these protocols remain unchanged: 153800bps for serial protocols and 100,00Kbps for I2C. Standard interfaces for all protocols are provided on-board, along with various power input options.
Powering the DevDevil is as simple as connecting to the on-board mini USB port. Additional power options include an AC adapter, power via the DB9 interface, and a 4-pin data/power input. A basic USB connection allows easy hookup of the development board, while the other options accommodate more advanced project requirements.
The following pages provide a more detailed overview of these features, along with instructions for connecting to and communicating with the Matrix Orbital DevDevil. With only the information provided and a little imagination, the DevDevil opens up an exciting world of display possibilities!
