A single LED is great, but a matrix of LEDs is even better! These matrices use "multiplexing" technology to control 64 LEDs with just 16 pins. However, that's still a lot of pins — and while driver ICs like the MAX7219 can control a matrix, the wiring is complex and takes up a lot of space. Adafruit understands your frustration: wouldn't it be great to control a matrix without all that wiring? That's exactly what these adorable LED matrix backpacks deliver. They come in three types: a mini 0.7" 8×8 matrix, a small 1.2" 8×8 matrix, and a 4-digit 0.56" 7-segment display. They are designed to work perfectly with the matrices sold in the Adafruit shop, making it incredibly easy to add a bright little display to your project. The driver IC on the matrix does all the heavy lifting for you: a built-in clock handles multiplexed display; constant-current drivers deliver ultra-bright, color-consistent output with 1/16-step display dimming — all controllable via a simple I²C interface. These 1.2" matrix backpacks feature three address selection jumpers, allowing you to connect up to eight 1.2" 8×8 matrices on a single I²C bus (or various combinations, such as four 1.2" 8×8 matrices and four 7-segment displays). Each kit includes: one fully tested and assembled 1.2" LED backpack, one 1.2" 8×8 square-pixel blue LED display, and one 4-pin header. Mounting the matrix onto the backpack requires a little soldering, but it's very straightforward and takes about 5 minutes. Of course, in true Adafruit fashion, we have a detailed tutorial covering soldering, wiring, and display control. We've even written a very handy library for the backpack so you can be up and running in half an hour — displaying images on the matrix or numbers on the 7-segment display. If you've been eyeing matrix displays but held back by the complexity, this is the solution you've been looking for!
