What's better than a single LED? Lots of LEDs, of course! Matrices like these are "multiplexed," so to control 64 LEDs you only need 16 pins. With a higher pin count, while driver chips like the MAX7219 can control a matrix, they require a lot of wiring and take up a great deal of space. Adafruit feels your pain! After all, wouldn't it be great to control a matrix without all that wiring? That's where these adorable LED matrix backpacks come in. They come in three types: mini 0.7" 8×8 matrix, small 1.2" 8×8 matrix, and 4-digit 0.56" 7-segment display. They're a perfect fit for the matrices available in the Adafruit shop, making it easy to add a bright little display. The matrix uses a driver chip to handle all the complex work: a built-in clock for multiplexed display, constant-current drivers for ultra-bright and color-consistent output, and 1/16-step display dimming via a simple I²C interface. These 1.2" matrix backpacks feature three address selection jumpers, so you can connect up to eight 1.2" 8×8 matrices on a single I²C bus (or various combinations, such as four 1.2" 8×8 matrices and four 7-segment displays). The kit includes: one fully tested and assembled 1.2" LED backpack, one 1.2" 8×8 square-pixel white matrix with backpack, and one 4-pin header. Connecting the matrix to the backpack requires a bit of soldering, but it's very straightforward and takes about 5 minutes. Of course, in true Adafruit fashion, we also provide a detailed tutorial showing how to solder, wire, and control the display. We've even written a very handy library for the backpack so you can be up and running in half an hour, displaying images on the matrix or numbers on the 7-segment display. If you've been eyeing matrix displays but hesitated due to the complexity, this is the solution you've been looking for!
