What's better than a single LED? Lots of LEDs, of course! Matrices like this one are "multiplexed," so to control 64 LEDs you only need 16 pins. That's still a lot of pins, and while driver chips like the MAX7219 can help you manage the matrix, they require a lot of wiring and take up a lot of space. We feel your pain! After all, wouldn't it be great if you could control a matrix without all that wiring? That's where these adorable LED matrix backpacks come in. We offer three types: mini 0.7" 8×8, small 1.2" 8×8, and 4-digit 0.56" 7-segment. They're a perfect fit for the matrices in our Adafruit store, making it a breeze to add a bright little display to your project.
These matrices use a driver chip to do all the heavy lifting for you: they have a built-in clock so they can multiplex the display, constant-current drivers for ultra-bright, consistent color, 1/16-step display dimming — all over a simple I²C interface. These 1.2" matrix backpacks feature three address selection jumpers, so you can connect up to eight 1.2" 8×8 matrices on a single I²C bus (or mix and match, such as four 1.2" 8×8 matrices and four 7-segment matrices, etc.).
The product kit includes:
A bit of soldering is required to mount the matrix onto the backpack, but it's very easy and only takes about 5 minutes.
Of course, in classic Adafruit fashion, we also have a detailed tutorial showing you how to solder, wire, and control the display. We've even written a nice library for these backpacks so you can get up and running in half an hour, displaying images on the matrix or numbers on the 7-segment display. If you've been eyeing matrix displays but hesitated due to the complexity, this is the solution you've been looking for!
