You might think our world-famous 32 LEDs-per-meter digital LED strip is unbeatable, but we're about to prove you wrong! These NeoPixel strips feature 30 digitally addressable pixel LEDs per meter at a very affordable price, with a width of just 12.5mm — or 10mm if the strip is removed from its housing. This strip uses a black flexible PCB and is otherwise identical to the white 30 LEDs/meter version, differing only in the color mask on the flexible strip.
A few things to keep in mind: these LEDs draw a maximum of approximately 9.5 watts per meter (about 2A @ 5V). The maximum rating assumes all LEDs are at full white; actual current draw for typical color designs is roughly 1/3 to 1/2 of the maximum. Using a quality power supply — such as our 5V 2A or 10A supply — is essential!
Second, to achieve high density, the controller chip is integrated inside the LED itself, which is cool, but it also means the chip uses only one pin for input and one pin for output. The protocol used is extremely timing-sensitive and can only be driven by a microcontroller with highly repeatable 100ns timing accuracy. We provide sample code for Arduino Uno/Mega at 8MHz and 16MHz, and with some effort it can also work with Raspberry Pi or Beagle Bone Black — however, it is not compatible with Basic Stamp, NETduino, any other interpreted/virtual machine microprocessor, or any processor running below 8MHz. For those processors, check out our DotStar digital LED strips, which feature SPI-like I/O and work easily with Pi, NETduino, and other processors.
The way pixels are controlled via Arduino is that the entire strip must be buffered in memory. We've found that many Arduino UNO projects, after including all additional libraries, have only about 1500 bytes of available RAM remaining — enough to drive approximately 500 LED pixels. If you want to drive an entire strip while also including several other libraries, you may need to use a Mega.
With 30 RGB LEDs per meter, you can control each LED individually! That's right — this is a digitally addressable LED strip. You can set the red, green, and blue components of each LED with 8-bit PWM precision (giving 24-bit color per pixel). The LEDs are controlled by shift registers cascaded along the strip, so the strip can be shortened or extended. Only 1 digital output pin is needed to send data down the line. PWM is built into each LED chip, so once you've set the colors, you can stop communicating with the strip and it will continue to handle all LED PWM on its own.
The strip is made of flexible PCB material and comes with a waterproof jacket. It can be easily cut with wire cutters at the cut marks located every 1.3 inches / 3.4cm (one per LED). Simply solder to the 0.1-inch copper pads. Of course, strips can also be connected together to increase length — just be mindful of the current requirements! We have a 5V/2A power supply that should drive 1 meter of strip, and a 5V/10A supply capable of driving up to 10 meters (depending on usage). You must power these strips with a 5V DC supply — do not exceed 6V, or you risk damaging the entire strip.
As of May 21, 2014, these strips are available in 5-meter reels with a 2-pin or 3-pin JST SM connector at each end, plus separate power/ground wires. These strips are sold by the meter! If you purchase 5 meters at once, you will receive a complete reel with both connectors. If you purchase less than 5 meters, you will receive a single strip cut from the reel, which may or may not include connectors.
To wire up these strips, we recommend picking up some JST SM plug and socket cables. You'll need one of each — one wire for ground and one for the signal line. For the power line, you may also want a 2.1mm DC jack adapter to connect our wall adapter for power.
Our detailed NeoPixel Uberguide contains everything you need to work with NeoPixels of any shape and size, including ready-to-use libraries and example code for Arduino UNO/Duemilanove/Diecimila, Flora/Micro/Leonardo, Trinket/Gemma, Arduino Due, and Arduino Mega/ADK (all versions).
