Introduction

You thought our world-famous 32 LEDs-per-meter digital LED strip was already the best, but we're here to prove you wrong! These NeoPixel strips feature 30 digitally addressable pixel LEDs per meter at a very affordable price, with a width of just 12.5mm, or 10mm if removed from the housing. This is the white flexible PCB version of the strip — identical to the black 30 LEDs-per-meter strip, except for the different colored mask on the flexible PCB.

A few things to keep in mind: these LEDs draw a maximum of approximately 9.5 watts per meter (about 2 amps at 5V). This maximum rating assumes all LEDs are lit at full white; typical current draw for colorful designs is usually 1/3 to 1/2 of the maximum. A quality power supply — such as our 5V 2A or 10A supply — is essential!

Second, to achieve high density, the controller IC is integrated inside each LED. That's great, but it means the chip uses only one input pin and one output pin. The protocol is extremely timing-sensitive and can only be driven by a microcontroller with highly repeatable 100ns timing accuracy. We have example code for Arduino Uno/Mega running at 8MHz and 16MHz, and it can work with Raspberry Pi or BeagleBone Black with some effort — but it is NOT compatible with Basic Stamp, NETduino, any other interpreted/virtual machine microprocessors, or any processor running below 8MHz. For those platforms, check out our DotStar digital LED strips, which feature SPI-like I/O and work easily with Raspberry Pi, NETduino, and other processors.

When controlling pixels with Arduino, the entire strip must be buffered in memory. We've found that many Arduino UNO projects have only about 1500 bytes of RAM available after all additional features are included — enough to drive approximately 500 LED pixels. If you need to drive a full strip while including other libraries, you may need to use a Mega.

With 30 RGB LEDs per meter, each LED is individually controllable! That's right — this is the digitally addressable type of LED strip. You can set the color of each LED's red, green, and blue components with 8-bit PWM precision (i.e., 24-bit color per pixel). The LEDs are controlled by shift registers daisy-chained along the strip, so the strip can be shortened or extended. Only one digital output pin is needed to send data. PWM is built into each LED chip, so once the colors are set, you can stop communicating with the strip and it will continue PWM-controlling all LEDs for you.

The strip is made from flexible PCB material and comes with a weatherproof sheath. It can be easily cut with wire cutters — there are cut lines every 1.3 inches (3.4cm), one per LED. Solder to the 0.1-inch copper pads to get started. You can also connect strips end-to-end to extend the length — just mind the current requirements! Our 5V/2A power supply should be sufficient for 1 meter of strip, while our 5V/10A supply can drive up to 10 meters (depending on usage). These strips must be powered with 5V DC — do not exceed 6V, or you risk damaging the entire strip.

As of May 20, 2014, these strips are available in 5-meter reels with 2- or 3-pin JST SM connectors on each end plus separate power/ground wires. These strips are sold by the meter! If you purchase 5 meters at once, you'll receive a complete reel with both connectors. If you purchase less than 5 meters, you'll receive an individual strip cut from the reel, which may or may not have connectors.

To wire up these strips, we recommend picking up some JST SM plug and socket cables. You'll need one of each — one wire for ground and one for signal. For the power line, you may also want a 2.1mm DC barrel jack to wire up, allowing you to connect one of our wall adapters for power.

Our detailed NeoPixel Überguide contains everything you need to use NeoPixels in any shape and size. It includes ready-to-use libraries and example code for Arduino UNO/Duemilanove/Diecimila, Flora/Micro/Leonardo, Trinket/Gemma, Arduino Due, and Arduino Mega/ADK (all versions).
