This miniature 5050 (5mm × 5mm) RGB LED uses the same integrated LED technology as NeoPixel strips and pixels, making it easy to build smart LED arrays. It is relatively straightforward to solder and is an ideal choice for compact multi-high-brightness LED integration. The LED integrates a driver IC internally, providing approximately 18mA constant-current drive to ensure highly consistent color during voltage fluctuations, with no external choke resistors required — enabling a minimal design. The entire device operates from a 5V DC supply.
This is the 4-pin LED die version, not the 6-pin version. It is code-compatible with the 6-pin version and shares the same overall footprint and functionality, but has a different pinout and therefore cannot be used as a drop-in replacement for the 'S die. For new PCB designs, the B version is recommended, as it features built-in reverse-polarity protection. Otherwise, the B version is identical to the S version in terms of brightness and code interface.
These LEDs can be "chained" by connecting the output of one die to the input of the next; refer to the datasheet for wiring diagrams and pin definitions. To integrate the entire die into a 6-pin package, a single data line with strict timing requirements is used. Because the protocol is extremely timing-sensitive, it requires a real-time microcontroller such as AVR, Arduino, PIC, or mbed, and is not compatible with Linux-based single-board computers or interpreted microcontrollers such as Netduino or Basic Stamp. The LED essentially integrates a WS2811 driver IC internally, fixed at the 800kHz "high-speed" mode. Our excellent NeoPixel library for Arduino supports these pixels! Since the library requires manual assembly code tuning, it only supports AVR cores, though drivers for other platforms may have been ported — users are encouraged to search independently. A processor running at 8MHz or faster is required.
These bare-die LEDs are cut from reels and may be supplied in bulk form. They may not be suitable for pick-and-place and reflow soldering processes. We recommend hand soldering only, with great care! Each package contains 100 individual LEDs. Ready-to-use component models are available in the Adafruit EAGLE component library.
