Introduction

You thought our world-famous 32 LEDs-per-meter digital LED strip was unbeatable — we're here to prove you wrong! Want twice the LEDs? Done (technically 1.875x, but that's within the margin of error). Want a narrower strip? It's now just 12.5mm wide, or 10mm if removed from its casing. Want a less conspicuous strip color? This version features a black flexible PCB that's far less noticeable against dark walls. Aside from the different color of the flexible PCB, this strip is identical to the white 60 LEDs-per-meter version.

All your dreams have come true — but there are a few things to keep in mind. First, higher density means significantly higher power consumption over a given length: up to 18W per meter (approximately 3.5A @ 5V), compared to the previous maximum of 9.6W (approximately 2A @ 5V). The maximum rating assumes all LEDs are fully lit in white; typical current draw for colorful designs is usually 1/3 to 1/2 of the maximum. A quality power supply — such as our 5V 10A supply — is essential!

Second, to achieve high density, the control IC is integrated inside each LED. That's cool, but it also means the chip uses only one input pin and one output pin. The protocol used has very strict timing requirements and can only be driven by a microcontroller capable of highly repeatable 100ns timing precision. We have sample code for Arduino Uno/Mega running at 8MHz and 16MHz, and with some effort it can work with Raspberry Pi or Beagle Bone Black — but it will not work with Basic Stamp, NETduino, any other interpreted/virtual machine microprocessor, or any processor running below 8MHz. For those platforms, check out our DotStar digital LED strips, which feature SPI-like I/O and work easily with Pi, NETduino, and other processors.

Third, having this many pixels doesn't mean you have enough RAM to handle them all — the entire strip must be buffered in memory. We've found that many Arduino UNO projects have only about 1500 bytes of free RAM once everything else is included, which is just enough for roughly 500 LED pixels. If you want to drive the full strip while also including other libraries, use a Mega.

These LED strips are extra fun and flashy. With 60 RGB LEDs per meter, you can control each one individually — yes, this is a digitally addressable strip. You can set the red, green, and blue components of each LED with 8-bit PWM precision (24-bit color per pixel). The LEDs are controlled by shift registers daisy-chained along the strip, so you can shorten or extend it as needed. Only one digital output pin is required to send data. PWM is built into each LED chip, so once you've set the colors, you can stop communicating with the strip and it will continue PWM-controlling all LEDs for you.

The strip is made from flexible PCB material and comes with a waterproof sheath. It can be easily cut with wire cutters — cut lines are provided every 0.65 inches (1.7cm, one per LED). Simply solder to the 0.1-inch copper pads. Of course, strips can be connected together to extend the length — just keep an eye on your current requirements! We carry a 5V/2A power supply that should drive 1 meter (depending on usage), and a 5V/10A supply capable of driving up to 4 meters (depending on usage). You must power these strips with a 5V DC supply — do not exceed 6V, or you risk damaging the entire strip.

As of April 2, 2014, these strips are available in 4-meter reels with 2- or 3-pin JST SM connectors on each end, plus separate power/ground wires. Strips are sold by the meter! If you purchase 4 meters at once, you'll receive a complete reel with both connectors. If you purchase less than 4 meters, you'll receive a single cut strip, which may or may not include connectors.

To connect these strips, we recommend picking up some JST SM plug and socket cables — you'll need one of each, one wire for ground and one for signal. For the power line, you may also want a 2.1mm DC barrel jack for wiring to one of our wall adapters.

Our in-depth NeoPixel Überguide has everything you need to use NeoPixels in any shape and size, including ready-to-use libraries and example code for Arduino UNO/Duemilanove/Diecimila, Flora/Micro/Leonardo, Trinket/Gemma, Arduino Due, and Arduino Mega/ADK (all versions).
