Introduction

This LED matrix stands out for its compact size and vibrant colors — just don't eat it despite how it looks. It's the smallest LED grid we can make, packing 64 full RGB color pixels into a mere 1 inch × 1 inch (25.4mm × 25.4mm) square area. Best of all, these are DotStar LEDs with built-in PWM drivers, so only two digital I/O pins are needed to light them up.

Don't let the small size fool you, though — each LED is still incredibly, even blindingly bright, just like the DotStar or NeoPixel LEDs you know and love. These are exactly the same integrated LEDs used in our new fancy DotStar LED strips, just in a smaller package.

The LEDs are arranged in an 8×8 matrix with individually addressable pixels: similar to NeoPixels, DotStar LEDs have a microcontroller embedded inside. You can set each LED's color/brightness to 24-bit color (8 bits each for red, green, and blue). Each LED acts like a shift register, reading incoming color data on its input pin while shifting the previous color data out through its output pin. By sending a long stream of data, you can control an "unlimited" number of LEDs. PWM functionality is built into each LED chip, so once the color is set, you can stop communicating and the chip will continue driving PWM for all LEDs on its own.

Wiring is straightforward: there are two 4-pad connection ports on the back. Solder wires to the input port (+5V, GND, ClockIn, and DataIn), supply 5VDC to the +5V and ground pins, then connect the CIN/DIN pins to your microcontroller. If you have hardware SPI, use the SCK and MOSI pins respectively. You'll also need to share a common ground between the 5V supply and your microcontroller/Arduino. Since each LED can draw up to 40mA at full white (meaning total current can reach up to 2.5 amps per panel!), we recommend our 5V 2A power supply if you plan to run full brightness with lots of white. For most use cases, current draw is around 0.5A per panel, and you can reduce it further by setting the brightness. Note that such high current through a small board can cause it to get hot!

To keep the board compact, we didn't place any small SMT capacitors on the front. Instead, there's a set of power/ground pads on the back where you can solder a 220uF capacitor for a low-profile installation. There are also four mounting holes for securing the board, or you can snap off the tabs with pliers if you want a perfect 1-inch square.
