Introduction

Armadillo is a complete Linux-based computer display module featuring a built-in 24-bit color, 480x272 resolution TFT LCD display with resistive touch capability (Armadillo-43T), or available in a non-touch version (Armadillo-43) for special requirements. At its core is the Broadcom BCM2835 SoC, which integrates an ARM1176JZF-S CPU with a VideoCore IV GPU in a single package. The Armadillo-43 is equipped with 512MB RAM shared between the CPU and GPU. The module requires a microSD card loaded with a suitable image file to boot, as it has no onboard flash memory, and uses the microSD card for both booting and persistent storage. By default, Armadillo is developed to run Armadillian OS — a Raspbian (derived from Debian) based operating system optimized for the BCM2835. Raspbian is the primary OS used by Raspberry Pi, backed by a large user base and developer community. Since Armadillo uses the same SoC, it can leverage most applications written for Raspberry Pi. The module provides 14 GPIOs, of which 2 are available for a single I²C channel, 5 for a single SPI channel (with 2 chip selects), and 2 for a single serial UART. Two PWM channels are also available to the user, one of which is shared with mono audio output via an onboard amplifier and mini speaker (which can be disabled). Each GPIO is fitted with clamp diodes to protect against damage from accidental overvoltage (e.g., connection to 5V devices). The module includes an onboard USB Type-A socket for connecting keyboards, USB storage devices, USB hubs, WiFi, Bluetooth, Ethernet adapters, and more.
