Introduction

IF-E99B is a high-speed red LED in a "connectorless" plastic optical fiber package. The output spectrum of the IF-E99B is produced by a GaAlAs chip with a peak wavelength of 650 nm, one of the optimum transmission windows for PMMA plastic optical fiber. The device package incorporates an internal microlens, and a precision-molded PBT housing ensures efficient optical coupling to standard 1000 µm core plastic optical fiber cable. The fast transition times of the IF-E99B make it suitable for high-speed digital data links. Using standard 1000 µm core plastic optical fiber and the IF-D98 photoelectric logic detector, link distances exceeding 75 meters are achievable at data rates of 156 Mbps. The wide analog bandwidth allows direct modulation at RF frequencies exceeding 70 MHz. The drive circuit design for the IF-E99B requires good RF and digital design techniques, but is considerably simpler than that required for laser diodes, making it a low-cost solution for a wide variety of high-frequency plastic optical fiber analog and digital applications.
