Introduction

The 125 MBd Universal Link (HFBR-0507ETZ series) is the most cost-effective fiber optic solution for transmitting 125 MBd data over distances up to 100 meters. The data link consists of a 650 nm LED transmitter (HFBR-1527ETZ) and a PIN/preamplifier receiver (HFBR-2526ETZ). They are compatible with low-cost plastic or silica optical fiber. The 1 mm diameter plastic optical fiber provides the lowest-cost solution for distances within 25 meters. The low attenuation characteristics of silica fiber allow longer-distance data transmission with minimal cost difference. These components can be used in high-speed data links, avoiding the common issues associated with copper wire solutions at competitive cost.

The HFBR-1527ETZ transmitter is a high-power 650 nm LED in a low-cost plastic housing, designed to efficiently couple optical power into 1 mm diameter plastic optical fiber and 200 μm hard clad silica (HCS) fiber. With the recommended drive circuit, the LED operates at data rates from 1 MBd to 125 MBd. The HFBR-2526ETZ is a high-bandwidth analog receiver incorporating a PIN photodiode and an internal transimpedance amplifier. In the recommended 125 MBd application circuit, the complete data link performance is specified over 0 to 25 meters with plastic optical fiber, and over 0 to 100 meters with 200 μm HCS fiber. A variety of other digital circuits can be used in conjunction with the HFBR-0507ETZ series to optimize performance and cost at both higher and lower data rates.
